Inspection

57X mm 49.01.003

Model year 2007 and later diesel engines in vehicles domiciled in the U.S. or Canada are required to meet all EPA exhaust gas emission regulations effective per the applicable emission model year and are equipped with an emission aftertreatment system (ATS).

Vehicles domiciled outside of the U.S. and Canada may not have aftertreatment equipment, depending upon local statutory emissions guidelines.

  1. Check the exhaust pipe, bellows, and each exhaust clamp for leakage.
  2. If present, check the condition of the insulation material around the exhaust pipe between the turbocharger and the ATD.
  3. Check the DPF exterior surface for dents or other damage. A dent over three inches (76 mm) in diameter and 1/4-inch (6-mm) deep could cause internal damage to the DPF, causing it to malfunction.
  4. Check the SCR catalyst for dents and other damage.
  5. Check for heat discoloration on the surface of the ATD. Heat discoloration may indicate internal damage; especially around the DPF.
  6. Start the engine and confirm the amber Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is not on steady, which indicates an issue with the emission control systems. See Fig..
