Inspecting the Engine Drive Belt

    Warning: The engine and the belt must be cool before you check the belt. Handling a hot belt can cause personal injury.

  1. Inspect the belt for damage.
    Transverse (across the belt width) cracks are acceptable.
    Longitudinal (direction of belt length) cracks that intersect with transverse cracks are not acceptable.
  2. Replace the belt if it has unacceptable cracks, is frayed, or has pieces of material missing.
