Activating and Deactivating Side Guard Assist

47x d 05.06.004

SGA becomes active when the ignition is turned on. The driver controls its setting using the driver assistance screen of the ICU also known as the digital switch or a physical switch if equipped.

In some operational conditions, such as construction zones, SGA may register false positives.

Vehicles built from January 2023 have an optional SGA OFF physical switch as shown in Fig..

While the vehicle is running and SGA is OFF, the driver display shows the side guard assist deactivation or error telltales as shown in Table..

After SGA is turned off, it remains off until the driver turns the SGA feature ON using one of the following:

  • the switch, if equipped,

  • the driver assistance screen on the driver display,

  • stopping and turning the vehicle off and on again.

SGA is automatically activated when the ignition is turned on. The ASGA relies on SGA and its activation is not controlled separately by the driver. The ASGA engages at speeds less than 12 mph (19 km/h). If SGA detects a critical moving object in the sensor monitoring area along the side of the truck during a passenger-side turn, the ASGA automatically applies the brakes.

Although monitoring is continuous, the audible and visual alerts can be deactivated fully. With the default setting, the SGA notifications are active for both the vehicle as shown in Fig.. Stationary and moving objects detected within range activate cautions and warnings.

A driver can override SGA and ASGA during a braking event by backing off the accelerator pedal, then pressing the pedal to the floor.

The driver can keep the default settings for SGA notifications to alert for objects within the range of the vehicle.

In some operational conditions, such as construction zones, SGA may register false positives. The driver can turn SGA alerts off manually for the truck using the driver assistance settings of the driver display.

After stopping safely, the driver can use the driver display to change the alert settings. For vehicles equipped with ICUC, the settings are shown in Fig..

For vehicles equipped with ICC5, the alert settings are shown in Fig..

If the vehicle is equipped with an ICUC instrument control panel, the driver display offers SGA for the vehicle.
