Lubrication System Checks

Lubrication System Checks - Gen 5 DD15 - Ops - #7628

The lubricating oil film on the rotating parts and bearings of a new or newly overhauled engine, or one which has been in storage for six months or more, may be insufficient when the engine is started for the first time.

To ensure an immediate flow of oil to all bearing surfaces at initial engine startup, prepare the engine as follows:

  1. Charge the engine lubrication system with lubricating oil using a commercially-available pressure pre-lubricator. Fill the engine to the proper level with the recommended viscosity and grade of engine oil, Synthetic Oils and Additives.
  2. After pre-lubricating, check the lubricating oil level, How to Check the Lubricating Oil Level. If necessary, top off by filling engine oil no more than 5.0 L (5.2 qt) at a time. Do not overfill as overfilling the oil pan can cause engine damage.
