Lubrication System Checks

The lubricating oil film on the rotating parts and bearings of a new or newly overhauled engine, or one which has been in storage for six months or more, may be insufficient when the engine is started for the first time.

To ensure an immediate flow of oil to all bearing surfaces at initial engine startup, prepare the engine as follows:

1. Charge the engine lubrication system with lubricating oil using a commercially-available pressure pre-lubricator. Fill the engine to the proper level with the recommended viscosity and grade of engine oil; see Synthetic Oils and Additives.
2. After pre-lubricating, check the lubricating oil level. SeeHow to Check the Lubricating Oil Level for information. If necessary, top off by filling engine oil no more than 5.0 L (5.2 qt) at a time. Do not overfill, as overfilling the oil pan can cause engine damage.
