Safety Information
SGA and ASGA are only aids for a conscientious driver. These guidelines serve as reminders for situations in which the driver must be especially alert and attentive. ASGA relies on SGA, if SGA is impaired, ASGA cannot provide notifications or assist during low speed, passenger-side turns when a critical object is present.
Before driving the vehicle, ensure the radar sensor cover is free from dirt, ice, or slush. If the sensors get dirty while driving, the telltale on the driver display may change from a grey triangle indicating active SGA to a grey triangle with a slash. In this case, pull off to a safe location to clean them. The radar sensors must be free of paint or other coverings such as stickers.
Warning: If detection is impaired, SGA may issue a warning too late or not at all. The following conditions can restrict detection of obstacles:
-
dirty, icy, or obscured sensors
-
very wide lanes
-
vehicles not driving in the middle of their lane
-
barriers or other road boundaries
The risk of an accident is increased in these situations.
The driver must pay attention to the traffic situation and maintain a safe distance at the side of the vehicle.
Important: If the sensors are dirty or SGA malfunctions, a grey triangle alert icon with a slash or exclamation mark appears on the driver display. SGA has stopped tracking objects in the monitoring range and notifications are not available
Depending on the situation and the trailer, SGA may issue a warning prematurely or not at all. In addition to unobstructed sensors, always ensure the distance to the side for other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and obstacles is sufficient.
Be cautious and attentive in the following scenarios. SGA notifications may be delayed, inactive, in error, or interrupted.
-
May be inactive a short duration after coupling; the ability to activate it is delayed.
-
May be inactive for a short duration after pulling away from a loading dock.
-
During passenger-side turns, monitoring becomes limited for the end of the trailer and the back corner or bumper. Extra attentiveness is required.
-
Inactive on objects within approximately 6 inches of the passenger-side of the vehicle and trailer. Objects within this area are not detected.
-
Inactive on objects that are alongside a second trailer.
-
In error when driving close to barriers or other solid boundaries. For example driving through construction sites, see Activating and Deactivating SGA for more information.
-
Interrupted during prolonged driving alongside particularly long vehicles.
See an authorized dealer to have the function of the radar sensors checked if any of the following circumstances are true:
-
If the vehicle is involved in a severe accident.
-
If there is damage to the passenger-side footsteps.
-
If the needs servicing telltale, a grey triangle with an exclamation mark, appears in the driver’s display.
-
If SGA malfunctions.
The active monitoring areas are shown in Fig..
SGA only monitors the passenger-side of the vehicle and one trailer. The two dark cones indicate two sensors: one angled toward the front of the truck; one angled toward the back. Objects within 6-inches of the truck are not detected. Monitoring of other areas would require additional equipment that is outside the scope of this section.
